Morning and Evening Prayer

Introduction From earliest times, Christians gathered at regular hours during each day and night to respond to God's word with praise on behalf of all creation and with intercession for the salvation of the world. By the fourth century, if not earlier, mo ing and evening had emerged as the pre-eminent hours for the offering of this sacrifice of praise. They have remained so ever since, especially on Sundays when the Church commemorates both the first day of creation and the day of Christ's resurrection. These orders of service are examples of forms which comply with the provisions of A Service of the Word and are intended to help Christians of our own day take their part in this privilege and duty which belongs to all God's priestly people. They may be celebrated in a va...

No Churches, Violence And Harassment: Life For Christians In Afghanistan

Non-Muslims in Afghanistan continue to suffer violence and harassment and there are still no public places of Christian worship. Just a few places of worship for Sikhs, Hindus, and Jews remain but the last public Christian church in Afghanistan was destroyed in March 2010, the report says. Conversion from Islam to another religion is apostasy punishable by death for men and life imprisonment for women. Hindus, Sikhs, Bahais, and Christians make up about 0.3 per cent of the 32.6 million population in Afghanistan. There is one Jewish person left in the entire country, according to the latest Inte ational Religious Freedom report from the US State Department. His name is Zablon Simintov. Where Afghan Christians Flee After Converting to Christianity

Capital city of nearby country becomes haven for converts—even though denied refugee status. Abby Stocker [ posted 7/25/2013 11:44AM ] 56 tweet share emailemail -->print The New York Times sheds fresh light on the challenges faced by Afghan Christians seeking religious freedom, spotlighting the growth of a refugee church in India's capital city, New Delhi. As the Times observes in a report worth reading, more than 200 Christian converts from Muslim backgrounds have fled to New Delhi, seeking refuge from the Taliban and from political backlash after television coverage resulted in one Afghan politician's urging the gove ment to execute converts in 2010. As CT noted in July 2010, the Afghan gove ment also suspended operations of two Christian NGOs after an Afghan TV station broadcast c...

Afghan woman's ears cut off by husband

Image caption Zarina, recovering in hospital, said her husband had tried to stop visits to her parents A 23-year-old Afghan woman has described to the BBC how her husband tied her up and cut off both her ears in a domestic violence attack in the northe province of Balkh. The woman - Zarina - is now in a stable but traumatised condition in hospital. "I haven't committed any sin," she said. "I don't know why my husband did this to me." The woman's husband is on the run in Kashinda district following the attack, police have told local media. Zarina told Pajhwok news that the unprovoked attack took place after her husband suddenly woke her up. She was married at the age of 13, and told BBC that "relations with her husband were not go...

Afghan man 'cut off wife's nose with a kitchen knife'

Police in central Afghanistan are searching for a man who allegedly cut off part of his wife's nose with a kitchen knife. The woman, thought to be 20, is in hospital. Officials say the man has reportedly assaulted his wife before. Although such mutilation is rare in Afghanistan, reports of violence against women are increasing. Last year the country's Human Rights Commission said violence against women rose by almost 25%, compared with 2012. The names of the couple have not been released but police in Daykundi Province say the man attacked his wife after a heated argument. "The husband cut his wife's nose with a kitchen knife," said Muhammad Ali Atai of the Provincial Crime Branch in Daykundi. "Police transferred her to hospital. But her husband escaped from the area and is still at...

Two tales of brutality to women in Afghanistan

Women's rights may have moved up the agenda in Afghanistan over the last decade, but violence against women has increased sharply, rights groups say. Two recent cases of brutality have shocked the nation, as the BBC's Mahfouz Zubaide and Yo Haniewicz in Kabul report. Readers may find some of the details in these accounts distressing. The Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission has said that the number of cases of violence against women in 2013 has risen by 24.7% compared with last year - an increase it describes as "staggering". Some of these reports will be the kind of everyday violence that a number of Afghan women face at home. Many women are too afraid to seek justice because, campaigners say, more often than not their cases are ignored. But others are cases of brutality met...

Introduction to Daily Prayer

Mo ing and Evening Prayer From earliest times, Christians gathered at regular hours during each day and night to respond to God's word with praise on behalf of creation and with intercession for the salvation of the world. By the fourth century, if not earlier, mo ing and evening had emerged as the pre-eminent hours for the offering of this sacrifice of praise. The services of Mo ing and Evening Prayer help Christians of our own day take part in this privelige and duty which belongs to all God's people. They may be celebrated in a very simple form, or enriched with a variety of optional chants and prayers. Two forms of service for Mo ing and Evening Prayer are offered here: The traditional service from The Book of Common Prayer (1662) A mode service from Common Worship: Daily Prayer A ...

Words of Jesus

Jesus Said that He Is The Water of Life John 4:13, 14 Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again: But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life. The Good Shepherd John 10:10, 11 The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. THE SEVEN WORDS OF JESUS ON THE CROSS

Christ Jesus died on the Cross to redeem mankind, to save us from our sins because of his love for us. As recorded in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John in the Holy Bible, Jesus Christ was mocked, sco ed, and tortured in the praetorium. He carried his cross up the Via Dolorosa in Jerusalem to Calvary, was nailed to the Cross, and hung between two common criminals. He suffered an indescribable end, recalled by the Church on Good Friday of Holy Week. One may meditate on the Passion of Christ by reflecting on his Seven Words on the Cross or by a devotion known as the Way of the Cross. When religious pilgrimages to the Holy Land ended with military occupation of Jerusalem in the Middle Ages, a popular devotion known as the Way of the Cross arose during Lent retracing the...

Reviving Focus on Jesus' Words

Our mission is to proclaim our Lord Jesus' lesson that He was the "sole teacher." (Matthew 23:8-11). He ste ly told the apostles they were not to call themselves or anyone else a "teacher"! In John, Jesus explained why when He insisted that the "apostolos is not more important than the one who sent him." (John 13:16.) The Greek word apostolos means either the title of Apostle or messenger or one that is sent. Here Jesus meant He was more important than any Apostle or messenger. Even John the Baptist realized that despite knowing he himself was the greatest prophet who ever lived prior to Jesus (Matthew 11:11), yet he "must decrease" so that unfettered acceptance of Jesus' message would "increase." (John 3:30-31.) Once Jesus began preaching the kingdom, then it would rob him of the authorit...
